John Henry Rangel (also known as Juan Enrique), passed away peacefully at home on July 10, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 29, 1940, in La Feria, Texas and grew up in Harlingen, Texas, where he met and married the love of his life, America Balli. Together, they shared a beautiful life and raised five children. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a doting grandfather, and a wonderful great-grandfather. John was a man whose unwavering work ethic and boundless love touched the lives of many. He began his lifelong journey of hard work at the tender age of 12 as a delivery boy. He always embraced the opportunity to work hard and achieve outcomes better than anyone else. His parents taught him the value of hard work and deeply instilled in him "If you're breathing, you should be working.” He demonstrated a quality of work unlike any other while working for H.E.B. and then Krogers and was quickly promoted to management. John’s unstoppable work spirit and dedication led to the creation of America's Restaurant, a local establishment known for its delicious food and homemade tortillas. John and America proudly created unique recipes that drew a hungry crowd daily for many years. When most would be considering retirement, John embarked on this new venture with tireless enthusiasm, working long hours, seven days a week for many years. His passion for serving others was evident in every meal he prepared at the restaurant, making it one of Harlingen’s most popular restaurants for over three decades. John’s memory will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him, and in the legacy of the success of America's Restaurant. John’s life was a testament to the power of perseverance and outstanding work ethic. John cherished his family above all else. Preparing and serving delicious meals for his family was always his favorite event. Thanksgiving was “his thing” as he prepared the turkey and his famous dressing. A die-hard Cowboys fan, he loved for the whole family to watch and cheer on his team after the feast. He made sure that the holidays were extra special for all. Making tamales every Christmas Eve was a tradition he cherished and will be carried on by his children. He never considered his family “complete” without a four-legged loved one (or two) by his side. He had a particularly sweet spirit and fondness towards dogs since they brought him much comfort and great joy. For years, after John's busy days at the restaurant, he would collect leftover food scraps and drive around to feed homeless dogs and cats he came across. His regular visits made the animals familiar with him, eagerly running up to his vehicle. In a world where many overlook God's creatures, John consistently showed his care. He believed that every pet deserves love and attention. John also had a passion for classic, antique cars and had his own collection he was proud of. He loved antiques and classics because it reminded him of his roots. He grew up in the 50s in the RGV and was a perfect blend of Hispanic and American culture. He loved his green Chevy truck and always admired ‘the good ‘ole days.” He enjoyed cooking while listening to old classic hits by Elvis, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard, among others. He was often seen swinging his cooking utensils while dancing to this nostalgic rock and roll in the kitchen. He often loved dancing with his wife and daughters, whenever the mood struck. After completely retiring, he and his wife spent more time at home with his chihuahua companion, Dusty. Together, John and America created a bountiful garden that grew a variety of veggies and fruit. They also traveled to Las Vegas, one of John's favorite destinations. Playing the casino slots always brought a big smile to his face. But his real joy was making others laugh and having a good time. His humor was always ‘colorful’ and part of the legacy he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. John is preceded in death by his grandson, Dustin Lee Sellers, and his parents, Alberto & Apolonia Rangel. He is also preceded in death by his sisters and brothers: Guadalupe Perez, Angelica Maldonado, Mariana Garcia, Teresa Sanchez, Rebecca Meza, Roberto Rangel & Francisco Rangel. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, America, and children: Debbie Valenzuela (Eddie), Johnny Rangel (Ann-Marie), Cynthia Sellers (Grayson), David Rangel (Sharon), and Robert Rangel (Christy). He is also survived by his grandchildren: Noah Sellers, Ben Pena, Rebecca Hentzell, Miha Rangel, and Nadia Rangel. In addition, he is survived by his great-grandchildren: Benjamin Pena, Zoe Pena, Gage Hentzell, Hatcher Sellers, and Sailor Sellers. His sisters, Susie Rangel and Beatriz Rodriguez, also survive him as well as several nieces and nephews. The family will be receiving friends and relatives on Sunday, July 21, 2024, from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m., with a Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 22, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church in San Benito, Tx. with Fr. Joe Villalon officiating. Following the mass, John will be laid to rest at Mont Meta Memorial Park. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Johnny Rangel, David Rangel, Robert Rangel, Noah Sellers, Ben Pena and Ernie Galvan.
