Obituary of Melba Jo Fassold

Melba Jo Fassold, 86, of South Padre Island, Texas passed away on March 2, 2020 surrounded by her loving family at her home on South Padre Island, Texas. Melba was born in Augusta, Arkansas to Lena and Napoleon Williams on June 23, 1933.
Her career started as a saleswoman in St. Louis, pre-selling cemetery lots, and was recognized for her hard work by being offered a position at Rose Lawn Cemetery in Brownsville, Texas. Her and her husband Harold moved their family to South Texas and began a new life by opening a small import store. That store birthed the memorable Mexican tour company, Original Tours. She worked as a tour guide for 45yrs+ promoting the history of South Padre Island and Mexico. During that time, she served the Port Isabel Library Board and Port Isabel/South Padre Island Historical foundations to preserve and advocate our diverse cultures.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harold Lloyd Fassold; two sons, Harold Michael Fassold and James Craig Fassold; grandson, Nathan W. Hancock; and three great-grandchildren; as well as one son-in-law, Alejandro “Alex” Cruz Blancas.
She is survived by her three daughters, Patricia Fassold Blancas, Dianne Fassold Hancock, and Debra Fassold Garcia; four grandchildren, Raymond F. Brandriff, Christopher J. Brandriff, Benjamin L. Hancock, and Natalie N. Garcia; two great-granddaughters, Taylor Rae Brandriff and Aslynn Leigh Hancock; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Melba was beloved on both sides of the border by all her friends and extended family. Rest in peace, Melba.
The family will begin receiving visitors at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2020 followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 107 W. Mesquite St., South Padre Island, TX 78597 officiated by Pastor Bill Waddell. A private family burial will be held at a later time.
