Port Isabel, Texas: D'Ann Pfeiffer Zimmerman, 76, of Port Isabel, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend passed peacefully into Heaven on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at Solara Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas.
D'Ann was born on June 9, 1934, to Adele Vivian and Fritz Pfeiffer in San Antonio, Texas and attended Thomas Jefferson High School. She attended the University of Texas at Austin and Trinity University in San Antonio before marrying the love of her life William K. Zimmerman on June 12, 1953. The young couple started their married life at Fort Benning, Georgia where Bill was in infantry school. The Army took them from Georgia to Munich Germany and back again to Fort Ord in California. The decision to muster out of the Army brought the young family along with son Mike to Port Isabel, Texas where Bill joined his father and brother in the shrimping industry. While south Texas was not her first choice to settling down D'Ann quickly came to love the community and all it involved. As a devoted mother she dedicated her life to making a loving home for Bill, Mike and newest addition Jeff in Laguna Vista. She was active in her sons school activities and served as a Den Mother for her son's Cub Scout Troop. Additionally she was a founding member of the Laguna Vista Fireman's Auxiliary later to become the Laguna Vista Civic Club. The move to Port Isabel in 1984 seemed to be the push that ignited the passion for D'Ann to become move involved in the community. D'Ann served on the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation which aided in the creation of the Historical Museum of Port Isabel. She was also a director of the Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce serving two full terms. In 2007 D'Ann and Bill were awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce for their dedication and commitment to the City of Port Isabel. D'Ann was also a member of the Driftwood Garden Club. As with all things, D'Ann did not do anything halfway, most recently she became involved in the local chapter of the Red Hat Society. Theme meetings, trips and conventions were upper most on her mind and she along with the others were always looking forward to the next meeting.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years Bill Zimmerman. Two sons, Mike (Dolly) Zimmerman of Los Fresnos, Jeff (Rosie) Zimmerman of Laguna Vista; granddaughters Heidi Zimmerman Garza (Nicky) of Houston and Lindsey Zimmerman of Laguna Vista; grandsons, Hans Zimmerman of Austin and Billy Zimmerman of Kingsville; and great-grandson Nicolas Camacho.
