Obituary of Don Curry
Please share a memory of Don to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Don L "Sug" Curry, 75, of Port Isabel, Texas, entered into eternal life with the Lord on November 8, 2014 at La Hacienda Healthcare in Harlingen, Texas.
He was born in Italy, Texas on February 8,1939 to parents, Odie and Stella Mae Curry. He graduated from Harlingen High School in 1957. He married Velma Lewis in 1960.
Don moved his family to Laguna Vista in 1969 and lived in the Laguna Madre area until the time of his death. Don enjoyed many happy years fishing and hunting with his family, singing, playing the guitar, and delighted in the time he spent with his grandchildren. A carpenter by trade, Don built homes for over 40 years throughout the Valley. He will be remembered for his outstanding craftsmanship and impeccable work ethic. Don was known at the lumber yards for painstakingly hand picking every board and using a nail gun was out of the question. Don had a great sense of humor, loved coffee, a good debate, all sports, appreciated a good nap, and had a great interest in the weather. He very much looked forward to God putting him in charge of the barometer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Walter Wilson "Buddy" Curry; sisters: Dorothy Gaskins and Dixie Rutherford.
Left to cherish his memory are his four children: Eddie Curry, Karen Terry (Greg), Donny Curry, and Gayle Curry. Sisters: Bobbie (Jerry) Ammons and Velma (Don) Hurley; grandchildren: Colton Terry, Kyle Curry, Austin Terry, Michael Curry, Cameron Curry, Samantha Curry , Abigayle Terry, Callie Robinson, Kaplan Robinson, and Corbin Robinson; great granddaughters: Leann Curry, Aleigia Curry and Baylee Bynres; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home with a memorial service to celebrate and honor Don's life at 7:00 p.m., Pastor Don Ceglar officiating. Interment will take place in a private family ceremony at a place chosen by Don where he spent some of the happiest years of his life with his family.
"He fought a good fight, he kept the faith, he won the race!" Don's family takes comfort in knowing he is finally at peace, in his words, riding the wings of the great speckled bird. His children are most grateful for the love and dedication his cousin, Sterling Gray showed their father. They would especially like to thank the staff and nurses, Xylina and Thelma, at La Hacienda Healthcare for their care, compassion, and patience.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.
