Amelia Torres Gonzales, 89, of Port Isabel, Texas passed away on April 24, 2014 at Valley Regional Hospital in Brownsville, TX.
Amelia daughter of Tito and Irene Torres was born on August 7, 1924 in Brownsville, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Noe R. Gonzales, brothers,Ruben M. Torres Sr., Ph.D., Roberto Torres, Ramon Torres; two sister Antonia Torres Vallejo and Amparo Torres Lopez.
Amelia was very active in education of younger children. She was a member of a group of parents who formed a pre-school. It was known as "Esqueita". The School prepared young children before attending Public School in Port Isabel. At the time there were no Head Start programs. Later, Amelia became the head cook of the Head Start program. She loved to cook and bake desserts. As a member of the "Cookie Club" at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, she helped out in the CCE program by preparing treats for the students.
Left to cherish her memory are daughters: Nydia Perez (Eddie) of Laguna Vista TX, Ylda Garza (Meme) of Port Isabel, TX, Noemi Perez (Sonny) of Austin; seven grandchildren: Noe E. Perez (Diane) of Laguna Vista TX., Nolan E. Perez M.D. (Sandy) of Harlingen TX, Noreen Dimster-Denk( Dennis) of Venice, CA., Ron Garza (Robin) of Austin, TX, Erika Sadlar (Joseph) of Devine,TX, Kevin Perez (Audra) of Austin, TX., and Tisa Perez of Austin, TX. Amelia cherished her great-grandchildren: Cody, Shannon, and Ethan Perez, Nolan Perez II, and Natalie Perez, Bruno Dimster-Denk, Ty, Drew, and Trey Sadler, Justin and Tristain Perez; her sister, Alicia Tijerina; and her 4 brothers: Reynaldo Torres, Ramiro Torres, Ricardo Torres, and Rene Torres.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 27,2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a holy rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m., at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Port Isabel.
Memorial funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday April 28, 2014 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
