Obituary of Mildred "Millie" Gilmore

Mildred Bernice Gilmore, 94, passed away November 27, 2013 at the Sunshine Haven Hospice Home in Olmito, TX. after suffering a stroke on November 17th.
Mrs. Gilmore was born in Fond du Lac, WI on Oct. 1, 1919 the daughter of Emma and Herman Scheibach. She married Marvin Gilmore on March 30, 1941 in Fond du Lac, WI. shortly before he left for WW II.
She was employed at the First Wisconsin National Bank and Davis Division of Giddings & Lewis in Fond du Lac and later by the Harlingen Board of Realtors. Between those times she and her husband Marv moved to Grand Cayman Island in the British West Indies in 1969 to follow a dream and live on an island. There they opened the island's first drive-in restaurant and built an amusement park with go carts, golf driving range and miniature golf.
They returned to the states in 1976 and settled in Indian Lake, TX. Millie was always interested in politics and was one of the first women to be elected to the Fond du Lac County Board of Supervisors. In Indian Lake she served on the City Council and later was elected Mayor. She also served as an Election Judge in Los Fresnos for many years.
Millie loved to sing and was involved in community theater and several church choirs. She was proud to be a life member of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Marvin; daughter-in-law, Candace Gilmore; brother, Leonard Scheibach and his wife Irene; a sister, Margery Schirey and her husband Lester.
She is survived by two sons, Tom of Indian Lake, TX and Jim (Ginny) of Fond du Lac, WI and San Benito, TX; one granddaughter, Kari (Ryan) Voy of Horicon, WI, and one sister-in-law Joy Lou Failor of Ripon, WI. Mrs. Gilmore is also survived by many nieces and nephews throughout the country who looked up to her as the Matriarch of the family. She was a strong lady who touched many lives.
There will be no local services and cremation will take place in accordance with her wishes. Inurnment will follow at a later date at Esterbrook Cemetery in Fond du Lac, WI.
