Cruz C. Hernandez, 62, of Port Isabel, Texas, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2013 at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, TX. He was a lifetime resident of Port Isabel and a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. In high school he played football and ran track for the Port Isabel Tarpons. He was the owner of the Corner Store for many years. Cruz was a loyal fan of the Dallas Cowboys and loved gardening. Cruz is preceded in death by his father, Silverio Hernandez; uncle, Julian Hernandez; aunts, Geronima "Nima" Hernandez and Guadalupe Galvan; a niece, Ana Laura Hernandez; paternal grandparents, Antonio and Teresa Hernandez; maternal grandparents, Vicente Castillo and Eufracina P. Gonzalez; mother-in-law, Paula Delgadillo; and sister in law, Esmerlinda Delgadillo. Cruz is survived by his loving wife, Maria Guadalupe "Lupita" D. Hernandez; children: Daniel Hernandez of Dallas, TX, Juan Silverio (Pilar) Hernandez of Dallas, TX, and Dora Lynn (Xavier) Moreno of Austin, TX; three grandchildren, Emilia Hernandez, Valencia Hernandez, and Guillermo Hernandez; his mother, Tomasa C. Hernandez; brothers, Angel (Nora) Hernandez, Antonio (Martha) Hernandez, George (Nora) Hernandez, and Claudio (Martha) Hernandez; sisters, Victoria (Anicleto) Villarreal, Theresa (Rafael) Roux, Esperanza (Eduardo) Manterola, and Rosa (Jose Luna) Hernandez; along with several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito and will continue from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a holy rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 705 S. Longoria St. in Port Isabel. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Port Isabel City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Daniel Hernandez, Juan Silverio Hernandez, George Hernandez, Claudio Hernandez Jr., Marco Hernandez, Greg Hernandez, Julian Hernandez Jr., and Raymundo Rios.
