San Benito, Texas- Petty Officer First Class, Felipe "Pipo" Nunez passed away at his residence on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 in San Benito, Texas. Pipo was born on December 12, 1924 in San Benito, Texas to his parents Manuel Nunez and Leonore Olevera. During his lifetime, Pipo served in World War II from 1942-1945. In 1952 his re-enlisted in the Naval Reserves and was assigned to the Seabee Battalion and served in the Korean War. Between1968-69 he was called to Vietnam. Upon completion of his reserve time he received the "Seabee of the Year" award. After retiring from the service, Pipo worked as a Press Operator with the Valley Morning Star and retired in 1990 after 37 years. Upon retirement Pipo continued to enjoy his wife, friends, and family until his passing. He is preceded in death by his parents, Manuel Nunez and Leonore Olevera; and his daughter Belinda Nunez Franco. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Bertha "Cha Cha" Nunez; his sons, Don Nunez and Felipe "Phil/Corky" Manuel Nunez; sister Martha Nunez.; and niece Martha & Sam Caballero of San Antonio. Pipo enjoyed two grandchildren, Andrea Franco Barron and Jackie Louise Franco; and one great-granddaughter, Zoe Izabelle Zavala. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 30, 2012 from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm, with a holy rosary at 7:00 pm, at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito. Funeral mass will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in San Benito. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park. Military honors will be conducted at graveside by American Legion Post 43 of Brownsville, Texas. Honorary Pallbearers will be Nevel "Chief" Guajardo, Roberto Cordero, and +Rene Alaniz.
