Heaven received its newest angel, Guadalupe (Lupita) Medina on Saturday, March 9, 2024. She was born to the late Bentura Hinojosa and Rita Saldivar Hinojosa, on October 27, 1934, in San Benito, Texas. Lupita was a faithful Catholic at Our Lady Queen of the Universe and St Joseph’s church. During her 89 years of life, she held many titles including selfless daughter, beloved mother, devoted wife, loving grandmother, and great grandmother. Additionally, she was truly a blessing to so many in her roles as a seamstress, caregiver, foster parent, and senior companion. At the age of 6, she helped her father sell homemade items like charcoal, tamales and their farm grown fruits and vegetables through neighborhoods by foot. By the age of 13 she drove her father’s large stick-shift produce truck filled with vegetables from San Benito to San Antonio to sell at “El Mercado”. She gained the nickname Little Darlin’. Most of her life, Lupita was a seamstress regularly sewing for her family, sewing outfits for High School cheerleaders, the drill team, prom dresses, wedding dresses, quinceañera dresses, and quilted blankets that she personally delivered to patients at nursing homes. As a caregiver she earned a living with a home day-care for kids and lovingly cared for her elderly family members when they fell ill. She fostered Central American migrants for nearly a decade and left such a lasting impression that many would keep in touch and come back to visit as grown adults. Lupita lived life to the fullest as a world traveler enjoying many adventures in places that included Napa Valley in California, the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, Washington DC, Broadway plays in New York City, a Taylor Swift concert in Indianapolis and the white sandy beaches of Florida. She also ventured abroad to Italy, Spain, the Island of Ibiza, and Cozumel. In Hawaii, she fearlessly boarded a helicopter to fly over the active volcano Kilauea and hiked 2 miles up a mountain rainforest at the age of 75. The hiking guide was so impressed with her. At the age of 82, as a volunteer senior companion, she provided care, companionship, and education on diabetes care to the elderly. During one of her morning visits with a client, she discovered that the woman had fallen the night before and she was near death from struggling to get up all night. Thanks to Lupita’s quick actions, emergency services arrived and were able to save the woman’s life. She received recognition from Congressman Filemon Vela, Jr. She was preceded in death by her husband Julio Medina, Sr., sister Manuela Martinez, and brother Ramon Hinojosa. Left to treasure her memory are her children Juan (Elizabeth) Medina, Adelaida (Gilbert) Arellano, Blanca (Gilberto) Montemayor, Julio (Lisa) Medina, Jr., Christy (Carrie Walker) Medina, Joshua Medina and her half sister Connie Alleruzzo. Grand children Gabriel Montalvo, Veronica (Michael) Mull, Cari Ann Medina, Sarah (Alex) Monique Brewer, Victoria Leigh Montalvo, Carolina (Chris) Dee Hopper, Angela (RJ) Monique Olmos, Isaiah (Kassy) Lee Montemayor, Johnny (Gözde) Medina, Megan (Adam) Nyquist, Julio Medina III, and Sarah (Christian) Cavazos. Great Grandchildren Raven Montalvo, Deacan Gomez, Ryan Hite, Dylan Hite, McKenzie Mull, Michael Mull, Jr., Kolbie Rae Olmos, Córa Lee Hopper, Ritter Lee Montemayor, Alice Nyquist, Julio Medina IV, Carter Rey Olmos, Avery Nyquist, Cadence Jo Hopper, Calista Hopper, and Jaxson Israel Medina and numerous nephews and nieces whom she loved so much. The pallbearers will be Julio Medina, Jr., Joshua Medina, Gabriel Montalvo, Isaiah Lee Montemayor, Johnny Medina, and Julio Medina III. The Medina family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, March 15, 2024, from 3-9 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito, Texas. A recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Church. Following the mass, Lupita will be laid to rest at Mont Meta Memorial Park. You treated Lupita with dignity, respect, and compassion. A special thanks to her nephew Baldemar Ramirez whom she loved as a son and was always there for her. Our mom was an inspiration to many. We will dearly miss her adventurous spirit, hilarious sense of humor, joyful personality, compassionate soul, warm smile, and loving heart.
