Obituary of Bernard Kahn

Rancho Viejo, TX. Bernard Sumner Kahn, 86, passed away in his home in Rancho Viejo on December 1, 2007 following a lengthy illness.
He was born June 18, 1921 in Sioux City, Iowa to Ada and Samuel Kahn. Following graduation from high school Bernard enlisted in the Army Aircorp, where he served as a Lieutenant. Fighting in the European theatre during World War II, Bernard was part of the landing forces during the Allied Invasion on D-Day and later took part in the Allied liberation of Paris. Upon his return from the war, Bernard earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. Later, Bernard practiced law in Detroit, taught at Wayne State, served on the Board of Governor's of the Wayne State Law School, and enjoyed success in several business ventures in the Detroit area.
In 1972, Bernard married Gail Mason. The couple had three children and lived in Orchard Lake, Michigan for several years before relocating to South Texas, where he joined a Brownsville law firm. Bernard and spent 10 years teaching government, history and other social science courses at Texas Southmost College. Before retiring from his law career which spanned more than 50 years, he also played a role in the development of the Reynaldo Garza School of Law.
Bernard loved animals and was dedicated to animal rescue efforts. He also enjoyed being outdoors, spending countless hours at the Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge, camping at his ranch in Rock Springs and at his fishing cabin in Arroyo City.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived wife, Gail; daughters, Marisa of Port Isabel, daughter, Laura of Colorado; sons, Bernard Jr of Rancho Viejo, Steven of Rancho Viejo, Anthony of Detroit, MI, Mitchell of Houston, and Robert of Houston; grandchildren, Dagan and Marina Wise-Herring of Port Isabel; Bernard Kahn III of Brownsville; and numerous other family members and friends.
Visitation is scheduled Sunday, December 2, 2007 from 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito. A graveside service will be held Monday, December 3, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. at Rio Grade Valley State Veterans Cemetery. 2520 S. Inspiration Rd. Mission, TX.
