Obituary of Emma C. Holland
Please share a memory of Emma to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Guillermina (Emma) Carter Holland left her earthly home on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, in Port Isabel, Texas.
Emma was born on June 25, 1936, and lived her entire life in the Port Isabel community.
Emma is preceded in death by the following beloved family members: her benevolent husband of 39 years, Uvaldo Holland, Sr., her precious and ever-present daughter, Judith (Judy) Marie H. Sanchez, her parents, Antonio (Tony) Carter Sr. and Hortencia M. Carter, her nephew, Anthony Carter, her father and mother-in-law, Enrique Holland Sr. and Isidra Barrientez Holland, her motherly sister-in-law, Anna Maria Holland Ochoa and her brother-in-laws, Enrique Holland, Jr., Gonzalo Holland Sr., Rodolfo (Rudy) Gonzalez Sr., and Lauro Torres Ochoa.
Left to miss her peaceful and prayerful presence are Emma’s siblings: Rachel Gonzalez, Victoria (Vidal) Holland, Margarita (Oscar) Garza, and Tony (Lydia) Carter Jr. How Emma cherished her time and conversations with them! Likewise, Emma loved being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was the highest ideal of these to Uvaldo (Dorothy) Holland Jr. and Mark Anthony (Ana) Holland, and her son-in-law, Augustin (Guti) Sanchez. Emma’s doting love will also be missed by her 5 grandchildren: Edyth Marie (Johnny Jr.) Galvan, Joseph Joel (Dafne Ortega) Sanchez, Ashley Ann Holland, Kassandra Nicole Holland, and Robert (Rebecca) De Leon Jr. In her final days, nothing brought more light to her eyes than being around her 8 great-grandchildren: Jalen Jude Galvan, Kaleb Rian Galvan, Luke Edan Galvan, Leon Augustine Sanchez, Ian Joshua Zak, Mason Robert De Leon, Matthew Sylus De Leon, and Livia Belle De Leon.
The foundation of Emma’s life came from her family and the Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church where she was schooled. It was in 6th grade when she enrolled in public school and became a lifelong Tarpon fan. Her Tarpon pride did not diminish upon graduation from Port Isabel High School in 1954. Emma then became a cashier and a bookkeeper at the Central Power and Light Company in Port Isabel. In 1961, Emma married her life partner, Uvaldo Holland, Sr. and left her career and began her life as a full-time housewife and mother.
Emma’s kindhearted nature emerged as she mothered and mentored not only her children but relatives, neighbors, and anyone in need of her counsel. This and her deep faith made her the perfect candidate to be a “madrina” (godmother). She stood by and showed up for each and every one of her godchildren. Emma was the mother, the grandmother and the godmother present for any important event, be it a play, a program or any activity. Emma’s love showed in her presence.
Emma’s zest for life showed in her activities. She loved to dance with her husband, Uvaldo. She cheered on her Dallas Cowboys on Sunday afternoons. Emma looked forward to her outings with her amazing group of friends, also known as the “Golden Girls”. The “Golden Girls” were known to never miss a baby shower, bridal shower, “pachanga”, or any other function. Emma was so grateful for the “comadrismo” the “Golden Girls” provided.
Emma C. Holland’s memory, love and examples of faith remain with all of us.
