I am so sorry for your loss. My prayers for the Martinez Family. I remember he would call me once a week to check on me when I was working for the Brooks County District Attorney's Office. Because of my primo, it is one of the reasons why I ran for Justice of the Peace. I am now on my third term for Judge in Duval County Texas. Thank you so much, J.J. Martinez. My sincere condolences to the Martinez family! It is indisputable that JJ has earned his wings . I can see him standing at the Pearly Gates and making his most convincing final argument to Almighty God as to why he should be admitted into Heaven! I have no doubt he has been granted entrance!
When I first met JJ I was a new attorney working for the late Abel Toscano ! Mr Toscano was showing me around the courthouse and introducing me to Attorneys
we ran into. After meeting some debonaire looking attorneys, I met this long haired ordinary looking very nice man with a MickeyMouse keychain hanging from his pant pocket. Turns out it was JJ an extraordinarily smart and wise attorney!
Through many years practicing law, JJ became not only a colleague but a good friend!
The best way I can describe JJ is as the most genuine and honest attorney I ever met.

Oh goodness, how time passes us by. I remember J.J. as a little girl and a young teen. I recall how active he was in the Chicano movement and politics in Cameron County. During time off from his studies J.J. always made time to visit when he was in Brownsville. He, Tio Pablo, Ruben and Roberto would visit with my Mother Herminia to discuss to catch up on the happenings and politics. Some of those time they would go to the Kettle Restaurant to drink lots of coffee. I was so excited the first time I was included at the discussion table even though I did not drink coffe. I will always remember J.J.for his kindness, patient, caring and loving personality whose life mission was help others, fight for justice, encourage education, lift up those that were down and serve those in need. My heart is filled with sadness at his death, but rejoices in having known him. It's never goodbye my friend, only farewell for one day we will meet once again. Que en paz descances quierido Amigo. I extend my sincerest and heartfelt condolences to Gabriela and J.J.’s family; as well as to all those he loved and all who loved him.

My relationship with J.J. is different from most. You see, J.J. is my father-in-law. I didn’t know him till I started dating Belinda. I was not aware of the legendary status he had reached by the time I met him. As a young lawyer with a judge as a father-in-law was kinda scary thing. But J.J. never made feel nervous. He made me feel apart of his family. I quickly discovered his famous humor and were my wife got hers from lol. He would tell me some great war stories and provide me insight on the courts in Cameron and he made sure I always felt welcomed. His presence will be missed. His spirit will live on. RIP J.J.

J.J., as we all knew him, looked at things deeper than most. He saw the big picture especially as he untied the knots created by his clients and litigants before him. l loved and shared his values. He never lost his zeal to fight for the powerless and persecuted. He was for 'La gente' no matter their skin color or heritage. I didn't always agree with his rulings, but I never doubted his honor or intentions. J.J. was an old hippie, like me, who never changed while society did. His family should be very proud of him. Our community is. Viva la raza!

I just learned of Judge Martinez's passing from Ed Stapleton's note to the County Bar Association. JJ was a wonderful juvenile judge and one of the most honest lawyers and decent people I've ever known. There was never any need to get something in writing from him. If he told you he would do something, he did it; if he told you he wouldn't do something, he didn't do it. This is a sad day for the County Bar. We have all been blessed to have him. My condolences to his family.
