Obituary of Juan Garza

Juan R. Garza "La Guera", 83, of Port Isabel, Texas, passed away surrounded by his loving family on September 3, 2012 at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville.
He was a lifetime resident of Port Isabel and a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Juan was a Korean War Veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He joined the VFW in 1956 and became a lifetime member of the VFW Port Isabel Memorial Post 8791 holding several offices such as Sergeant of arms for 20 years and service officer for two years. He was involved in the Quarterback club, supporting his favorite team, The Mighty Tarpons. He was also a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, and his favorite past time was watching boxing matches. Juan was a shrimper for 41 years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Roque and Veronica Garza; brothers, Manuel and David Garza; and sister, Sally Tabbott.
Left to the cherish his memory is his loving wife of 62 years, Carmen S. Garza; and his children: Irma (Joe) Solis of Sebastian, TX; Maria Teresa (Benito III) Ochoa, Diego Garza , Abraham (Dominga) Garza, all of Port Isabel,TX; Victor (Rosario) Garza of Brownsville,TX, Romulo (Esmeralda) Garza of La Feria, TX, Carmen (Norberto) Floriano of Lafayette,LA, Mark (Elida)Garza of Laguna Vista, TX, and Marisa Garza of Port Isabel, TX. He is also survived by his three brothers: Guadalupe Garza, Roque Garza Jr., and Alejandro Lozano; five sisters: Socorro Ham, Paula Cruz, Sara Campos, Katie Camacho, and Herminia Lara. Also left to cherish his memories are his 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with a holy rosary at 7:00 pm, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Port Isabel, TX.
Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at 10:00 am at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 705 S. Longoria Street in Port Isabel. Cremation will follow in accordance with his wishes.
Serving as pallbearers are Brandon Solis, Charley Solis, Justin Solis, Benito Ochoa IV, Mark A. Garza Jr., Jesus Martinez Jr., Santiago Cisneros Jr., and Carlo Garza. Honorary Pallbearer will be his Korean Comrade Hon.Judge Moises Vela.
Military Honors will be conducted following the funeral mass by Past District 18 Commander Luis Lucio also V.F.W. Post 2035 of Brownsville, V.F.W. Post 8791 and American Legion Post 498 both of Port Isabel.
