Joel R. Olivares Martinez, 71, went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 19, 2021, at his residence in San Benito, TX with his loving wife by his side. He was born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. He raised his family in Weslaco and later on moved to reside in San Benito, TX for the remainder of his life. Joel started off selling newspapers as a young boy. He later worked at Progressive Groves and B D Holt Co. of Weslaco. His passion of sales turned him into a top retail salesman for Sears Roebuck & Co, Palm City and Montgomery Ward for many years of his life. He retired from Sears in 2006. He was a loving husband, caring father, son, brother, uncle and great friend to those who knew him. He was always telling jokes and laughing with all who gave him a listening ear to his numerous stories about his life experiences. He was a great friend to all who needed a helping hand. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. We hold you in our hearts until we see you again one day. Joel is preceded in death by his father, Leopoldo “Polo” Vera. He is survived by his wife, Anita M. Olivarez of 46 years; his daughter, Debra L. Olivarez; his mother, Socorro M. Vera; sister, Maria Banda; uncles and aunts; nephew, Rolando Banda; niece, Cristela O’Neal; and his great nephews. Visitation will be on Tuesday, November 30, from 5 p.m., until 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 01, at 2 pm., at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home with burial to follow at Mont Meta Memorial. The family would like to extend their gratitude for everyone’s heartfelt prayers at this difficult time.
