Rod was a good friend for over 20 years. He was like a brother i never had he will be truly missed. We are from San Antonio & we loved coming to him for coins & the Port Isabel & South Padre Island history he would tell us. We would come several times a year to see him & his mom Gloria & go out to eat after he closed shop.He introduced us to alot of his friends & the books he wrote. There are no words because we are really devastated. We just found out today by calling his cell. May he rest in Peace

Was a friend from the day I walked into his store, we shared a mutual interest in history and coin collecting and I always enjoyed bringing him something new I had discovered or go to see what new things he had found to show me. He would always try and help me when he could, and always had time to listen even when I didn't have much to say. He truly was one of a kind and will be missed. Rest in peace my friend.

My husband and I rolled into town just a few short years ago, bought a house and started a business. Our first year was very rough, but Rod was an amazing mentor and friend.
Rod was always there for us. He referred folks our way daily. He put us in touch with many of the experts he knew. Because we were all so busy, we didn't get to spend a lot of time together, but I feel like we lost a real friend. I know he made our lives richer for knowing him.

My name is Eric Brattin, Rod used to skateboard with my friends and I back in the 1980s. He influenced my skateboarding style by showing me how to combine surf style with skateboarding. Thank you Rod and Gid bless you

Gloria and family,
My condolences on the passing of your loved one. Rod was an interesting young man who would answer a question with a complete story. He was so happy in his new gallery.
Rest in peace Rod Bates.
