Glendon L. Benham, 93, of Laguna Vista, Texas passed away Wednesday June 30, 2021. Glen just celebrated his 93rd birthday on March 21st with a gathering of friends on his special day. Glen was born in Mulberry, AR and was the 6th child of Clarence and Lydia. After high school at 18 rather than waiting to be drafted, in July 1946 he enlisted in the U.S. Army for a period of 18 months and after two months of basic training he was shipped to Japan for a year of occupation duty. He received the GI bill and got two years of college after discharge. Having remained in inactive reserves when the Korean War began, and again facing recall, he reenlisted in January 1951. After training, finishing infantry O.C.S., and parachute training in July 1952 he remained at Fort Benning in Georgia in an Airborne unit as a Platoon Leader making some 18 jumps. In March of 1953 he was shipped as a replacement to Korea to the Second Infantry Division Company L. 38th Regiment and remained in L. Co. 2 Bat 38th Regiment Second Infantry Division until the truce was accepted in July 27, 1953. A cease firing was at 10 p.m. local time on that date and was required to move everything back 2100 meters within the 72 hours. It took another 5 months for him to be shipped home and out of service. This was a total of 4 and a half years. After serving his country, Glen moved to Morton, Texas. He was a policeman in Lubbock, Texas. Glen moved his family to Southern California in 1962. He was hired with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Glen graduated from California State College with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Police Science and administration in 1971. Glen retired as a sergeant in 1983. Glen was an avid runner, he ran many 10k’s and a relay run in Death Valley CA. Glen married Carole Ann in February 1979 in Upland, CA. The first time Carole Ann’s father met Glen he said, “He’s a keeper!” In October 1993 they moved to Ruidoso, NM. They shared ten years of golf, snow skiing and traveling with friends. Looking for “warmer weather” the Benham’s moved to Laguna Vista, Texas in November 2003. Over 18 years this is the place he called home. Glen enjoyed spending time at South Padre Island Golf Course and creating and cultivating many great friendships. Glen is survived by his loving wife: Carole Ann, son: Glen Mark (Cathy) Benham; Claremont, CA, daughter: Alesia (Craig) Robertson; Leona Valley, CA, brother: Carl “Cobb: Benham; Lubbock, Texas. The Benham family wishes to thank Kindred Hospice, Vanessa Valdez, and Albert Balli for their special care. Prior to his passing, Glen expressed, “To all my friends and neighbors; if we spent time together, then you know how I feel about you.
