SAN BENITO — Maria V. Cortez
a long time resident of San Benito, Texas died quietly in her home on Saturday, October 13, 2007, at the age of 91 surrounded by her four daughters.
She was a long-time member of the Iglesia del Nazareno, 490 S. Reagan in San Benito, where she taught Sunday School, was a Consecrated Deaconess often seen in hospitals and nursing homes visiting and praying for the sick. Her battle with Alzheimer's the last few years of her life precluded her from continuing with her church-related activities.
Mrs. Cortez is survived by four daughters; Esther (Alejandro) Mendoza of San Antonio, TX, Lydia (Enrique) Rodriquez of Corpus Christi, Texas, Rachel (Chuck) Bonning of Big Rapids, Michigan, and Toni (Cruz) Rodriguez of San Benito, Texas; 2 granddaughters, Stephanie Janetakos of San Antonio, TX and Athena (Travis) Goldapp of Corpus Christi, TX; 3 grandsons, Joe Rodriguez of Austin, TX, Rick Rodriguez of San Benito, Texas and Bill (Rachel) Bonning of Big Rapids, Michigan; 2 great-grandchildren, Eathen Hunt of Corpus Christi, TX and Cecilia Bonning of Big Rapids, Michigan.
Visitation will be held Monday, October 15, 2007 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. A celebration of her life service is scheduled at 7 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home north Chapel downtown San Benito.
Funeral Service will be at the Iglesia del Nazareno at 490 S. Reagan in San Benito on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at 10 a.m., and the burial will follow to San Benito City Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation in memory of Maria V. Cortez may be made to the Iglesia del Nazareno at 490 S. Reagan in San Benito, Texas.
