Obituary of Hilario Compean

Hilario Compean, went home to be with the lord and savior, Jesus Christ, on March 18, 2021. He was surrounded by his loved ones as he left this earth and entered the holy Kingdom of God.
He was born in San Benito, TX to Juan and Mariana Compean, and was a lifetime resident of San Benito, Texas Hilario had been a shrimper on the waters off the Texas Gulf Coast since he was sixteen years old. He quickly worked his way up to captain and spent most of his career as captain of the “Rosie B” shrimp boat until his retirement. Through his hard work as a shrimper, his children were able to receive their college education. Upon his retirement, Hilario dedicated his time to taking care of his grandkids while his children were at work.
Hilario loved spending time with his grandchildren and amazing them with stories of his adventures at sea.
Hilario was known as “Popo” to his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. He was a gifted artist and loved to help his grandkids with art projects for school. He enjoyed fishing on the resacas in San Benito, and was known for catching two fish at once. Popo enjoyed watching Bonanza and other western shows on television while in the company of his family. He was always dressed like a true gentleman, and we will always remember the scent of Tres Flores in his finely combed hair.
He is preceded in death by his parents Juan and Mariana Compean, sister Angelica(Gela) Garza, brother Apolinar (Gil) Compean and his loving son Jose Hilario Compean. Left to cherish his memories are his wife Graciela Compean: son Juan E. Compean; daughters: Enedina (Eleuterio) Martinez, Gracie (Jerry+) Mata, Mary (Amos+) Guzman and Rebecca (Israel) Compean; grandchildren: Trey (Dalia) Martinez, Eradio (Alexa) Martinez, Erik Daniel Martinez, Jeremy (Jasmine) Mata, Erica (John) Castro, Ashley Cruz, Angel (Clark) Ladd, Amos (Kimberley) Guzman, Nayeli and Noah Esquivel as well as 14 great-grand children.
Visitation will begin Monday, March 22, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with rosary at 7 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito, Texas.
Graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March, 2021, at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, Texas.
Due to current restrictions, this establishment will follow the 100% occupancy limit and all persons shall institute social distancing of a minimum space of 6 feet apart. All individuals must wear face coverings or masks. (May include bandanas or sewn or cloth face coverings).
