Norma Govea Mercado of San Benito, Texas passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 25, 2021, at the age of 76.
She was born in San Benito, Texas, on December 23, 1944, to Ignacio and Beatrice Govea.
Norma grew up in San Benito, Texas. Her schooling began at Fred Booth Elementary and ended with her receiving her GED. She began her work career as a young migrant worker picking grapes in California with her family. As a teenager, she was employed with a shrimping factory in Harlingen, Texas. Norma worked as a seamstress at Levi’s Co. and later retiring from Carter’s Co. After retirement, she worked at Valley Baptist Medical Center.
Norma is the youngest of three sisters; Aurora Abundiz (92) and the late Leonor Govea.
Norma married the love of her life, Antonio Mercado, Sr. on May 10, 1964. Norma and Antonio had five children, sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren to love and cherish.
Norma was very spiritual Catholic woman who enjoyed attending church and praying for all her family and loved ones. She loved to shop, play chalupa and attend her grand children’s events. Shem loved to listen to a variety of music and enjoyed sweets.
She will be deeply missed by all her family, friends, and all who knew her.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 4, 2021, beginning at 5 p.m., and will continue until 9 p.m., with a rosary beginning at 7 p.m., at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home. A graveside service be held at 12 noon, Friday, March 5, at the San Benito City Cemetery with Father Joe Villalon officiating.
Due to current restrictions, this establishment will follow the 75% occupancy limit and all persons shall institute social distancing of a minimum space of 6 feet apart. All individuals must wear face coverings or masks. (May include bandanas or sewn or cloth face coverings).
