Douglas Stewart Atwell Jr., 69 of South Padre Island, Texas, passed away Friday, July 10, 2020. Doug was born on July 7th, 1951 in San Diego, CA to Douglas and Greta (Peterson) Atwell. Doug proudly served in the US Army. He met his wife, Monica (Hillerman) Atwell, at the Alibi Inn Bar in Albuquerque in which his parents owned. Doug and Monica got married in the Sandia Mountains on July 14th, 1975. Doug then went on to attend George Washington University where he served as their Student Body President. Doug and Monica had 4 loving daughters, Dawn, Cassandra, Echo, and Toni. Doug later joined the car business and continued there for the next several decades until he later retired. Even still to this day, Doug is known as “Bowtie Doug”. Doug had moved to South Padre Island and resided there for the last 5 years. The island became his proud home and he made sure to leave an impact on all who came across his path whether it before only a few minutes or a lifelong friendship. Doug was famous for his 6-mile-long daily walks on the beach. The beach grew to be his sanctuary. Doug had a passion for politics, reading, music, and dancing. He was known for his quick wit, candidness, sarcasm, and his infectious smile. Doug never passed judgement and showed humility to everyone. He lived every single day to the fullest and was a true example of integrity. Doug is survived by his wife, Monica Atwell, daughter Dawn and daughter in law Jennifer, daughter Cassandra and daughter in law Tammy, daughter Echo and son in law Jaime, daughter Toni and son in law Mando, and 13 grandchildren. Services will be postponed until it is safe to celebrate properly. We would like to leave you with some of Doug’s favorite quotes. “Daddy/Grandpa Proud”. “I’m an old piece of leather but I’m well put together”. “Reality only sucks if you stay there too long.” Last but not least, “I’m a political hack for the Liberal Cause”.
