Darron Franklin Broadus, 65, of Port Isabel, Texas, passed away on April 9, 2012 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas.
Darron Franklin Broadus was born on February 8, 1947 in Washington, DC to Marion and Marian Broadus. He grew up in McLean, Virginia and Washington, DC. He graduated from Luther Jackson High School in Washington, DC. After graduation, he moved to Wisconsin and began his college education at the University of Wisconsin - Platteville. Midway through his studies, he joined the United States Air Force and served his country during the Vietnam War. After leaving the Air Force, he returned to Wisconsin where he continued his education at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and received a Bachelor's Degree in Education. He went to work for CUNA Mutual Insurance Company in the Training and Development Department.
Several years later, he joined the Barnhill-Hayes Consulting firm where he specialized in human relations training and establishment of affirmative action plans. He returned to his hometown of McLean, Virginia in 1982 and joined Bankers Life and Casualty Insurance. In 1987, a promotion required his relocation to Houston, Texas where he lived for 19 years. While in Houston, Darron continued his education at the University of Houston and received his Masters Degree in Education and his Ed.D. He also moved into the mental health field where he felt he could make a difference. He worked for the Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority before opening Houston Preferred Care, Inc., a community mental health center. He also opened Preferred Care Behavioral Health Center to provide outpatient care to people requiring mental health follow-up. In addition, he provided consulting services to other mental health facilities throughout the Houston area. In 2006, Darron followed his dream and moved to Laguna Vista. He continued his consulting work until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Case of Port Isabel, Texas; five children: Darron Franklin Broadus Jr., Carla Broadus, Karmen Broadus Lofton, Jason Broadus, and Jarrett Broadus; 10 grandchildren; one sister, Denise Broadus; and four brothers: William Broadus, Ronald Broadus, Marion Broadus Jr., and Wadie Broadus.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 13, 2012 at 10:00 am at Lighthouse Assembly of God Church in Port Isabel with Pastor Steven Hyde officiating. Military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 2035 of Brownsville, Texas.
