Obituary of Eva Gomez Martinez

Please share a memory of Eva to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Eva G. Martinez, 91, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 2, 2020 with her beloved family by her side. Eva was born on January 16, 1929 in San Benito, TX to the late Luis and Virginia Rodriguez Gomez where she grew up in a home the eldest of 13 siblings. She married Juan Martinez of San Benito and were parted early after being married for 43 years prior to his passing in 1990. Eva retired from the San Benito Independent School District after many years of being able to exercise her love for cooking in the school cafeteria. Her life through the church was also a living example of her favorite Bible verse, Ephesians 4:32 "And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ". Eva was an active and devoted parishioner to St. Joseph Church for many years through her service to the Virgin Mary. One of her greatest attributes was leading a 31 day teaching of the rosary to the children of the church each May for over 25 years. It was a devotion the children prayed the rosary each day and up to the mass celebrating the crowning of the blessed Mother. She also served as lector at the church, sang in the choir, was an Eucharistic minister, went on pilgrimages to visit churches in Mexico, as well as fundraise and participate in annual posadas and festivals to help with improvements for the church. She was involved in many organizations to involve the community with the church such as the St. Joseph Women's Society; Sacred Heart Society; as well as Catholic Daughter's of America. Love and dedication to her family was apparent to all who knew her. She had a passion for and spent many hours tending to her yard and gardening, loved fishing, and dancing. She loved cooking for her family especially the homemade tortillas for her beautiful grandchildren. She made many years of cherished memories always bringing the family together at holidays. Eva was a loving mother and grandmother survived by her 6 children: Santa (Frank) Serrata, Juan (Shirley), Peter (Sara), Margarita "Margie", Daniel (Leticia), and Maria de Jesus "Susie"; 8 grandchildren: Stephanie, Frank, Clarissa, Michelle, Tori, J.D, Samantha and Pete; 4 great-grandchildren: Krysta, Jordynn, Andrew and Thor; Eva was also survived by 3 sisters: Minnie, Yolanda, Lupe as well as 3 brothers: Arnulfo, Salome and Luciano. Please join us in celebrating her life. Public visitation will be held at Thomae Garza Funeral Home (395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito, TX) on June 5, between 12p-9p praying the rosary at 7pm.
