Ygnacio V. “Nacho” Caraveo, 70 of Los Fresnos, Texas, passed away on Monday, May 25, 2020, at his residence in Los Fresnos. Ygnacio Vicaniz Caraveo Sr. was born March 7, 1950 to the late David G. Caraveo and Angelita V. Caraveo in San Benito, Texas. Ygnacio’s younger years were spent farming and working in the fields alongside his father and sisters. At the age of 12, he was ranching cattle, picking cotton, riding horses from one pasture to another, and eventually learning how to drive a tractor. As a small boy, he said he enjoyed trips to the local store for groceries with his dad because he would get his father to buy him a pack of animal crackers. You see, times were tough living with a single father and money could only be spent on necessities, so the purchasing of toys wasn’t allowed. Well in that pack of animal crackers there came a small toy soldier inside. He had found a way to get himself a toy. I call that being resourceful! He wasn’t celebrating Christmas with gifts and toys, nor was he going to the beach to celebrate Easter, he was working in the fields day in and day out. Although that sounds sad for being just a kid, it helped mold him into a strong, hard-working man. In 1981, he met the young and beautiful Rosita G. Caraveo. It all started at the USDA office in San Benito. Those who know the family know that Maria C. Guajardo, Rosita’s mother, worked there for many, many years. Well Rosita came into the office in tears, crying that she had been in a car accident. Ygnacio being the nice, helpful man that he was, consoled her and offered to take a look at her car. She remembers a very good-looking man dressed all in western attire wearing sunglasses. And to this day if you ask Rosita, she says it was a total car crash, but Ygnacio on the other hand still calls it a fender bender. (It was a small dent in the front side of the car.) Regardless, that is where their love story started and continued into a marriage two years later. Wedding bells rang on Sept. 3, 1983. And he began to really enjoy life with Rosita as she showed him the way special holidays were celebrated and that birthdays came with birthday parties. And their marriage continued for 36 loving years. Then came fatherhood! Together they had two children: Ygnacio Caraveo Jr. in 1984 and Yvonne Rubi Tovar in 1989. He fit perfectly into his new role as a father. He was a very loving dad, supportive and caring. Whenever one of his kids needed something he was there. He enjoyed taking them to the early bird showing of all the latest movies, he drove them to practices and attended games. He shared his love of the accordion by teaching Nachito how to play and then taught Yvonne the bow and arrow. He was employed as a security officer for 25 years for Valley Baptist Medical Center and Golden Palms where he retired in 2013. He decided to quit working to become a full-time Grandpa to his grandkids David, Daniel, and Damian. Those boys were his pride and joy, so full of energy and could do no wrong in his eyes. He looked forward to seeing them every day, taking and picking them up from school, never saying no to taking care of them no matter how tired he was or sick he got. He lived for them. As Ygnacio aged he enjoyed hunting, fishing, drawing, and watching Western movies. He loved playing his guitar and accordion while hanging out with old friends and he enjoyed listening to Conjunto music. One of his most favorite hobbies was going to try his luck at the maquinitas. Oh, how we loved to gamble. But of course, not as much as he loved those 3 grandkids of his! He was the best man you could ever meet! He is preceded in death by his parents, David G. and Angelita V. Caraveo; and sister, Elida C. Nuñez. Ygnacio is survived by his wife, Rosita G. Caraveo; two children, Ygnacio (Angie) Caraveo and Yvonne Rubi (Jose) Tovar; three grandchildren, David Caraveo, Daniel Caraveo, and Damian Caraveo; four siblings, Esther Caraveo, Elva McNurlan, Elena Caraveo, and David Caraveo Jr.; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will begin Thursday, May 28, 2020, from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a holy rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito, Texas. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 29, 2020, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church and burial will follow at Los Cuates Cemetery. Due to current restrictions, this establishment will follow the 25% occupancy limit of 50 persons or less and all persons shall institute social distancing of a minimum space of 6 feet apart. All individuals must wear face coverings or masks. (may include bandanas or sewn or cloth face coverings). Honored to serve as pallbearers are Jose Tovar, Juan Perales, Joey Guajardo, Hector Lopez, Anthony Guajardo, George Caraveo, Joe Benavidez, and Jimmy Martinez. Honorary pallbearers are his three grandsons, David, Daniel, and Damian Caraveo.
