Our fondest memory of Mike and Coty, was when they literally "saved us" during our son's homecoming 25 years ago.
Our sincere condolences to the Cateora family. May you find strength in the memories that you cherish.

I attended Derry elementary with mike since 5th grade and some how always ended up in the same class through out high school. He was the nicest most polite and considerate guy I knew just recently he did the granite work on my kitchen and we talk for hours about high school I will miss him in that alley where I saw him every day. My condolences to the family Mussette Salazar.

Mike and his brother Rex have been friends of mine since I was a kid. I grew up as a commercial diver under my Dad's watchful eye, and in doing so I spent a lot of my youth on the shrimp boat docks, including the Cateora's. When I moved to L.A. in 1985 I lost contact with many of my friends, but upon my return it was as if no time had passed at all... When I brought my Dad back to PI earlier this year due to his failing health I was starting a new venture to do a documentary about my Dad and his partners and the history of SPI and PI. Over the years Mike had developed a lot of the same sense of appreciation of our shared history as I had, so it was only natural for us to gravitate back together and develop the documentary together. Mike had an overwhelming knowledge of historical facts that I depended on so much that I got him to agree to be interviewed for the show and thereby be an intricate part of it. I can't even begin to express the depth of our conversations of our shared interests in such.
Over the last several months I would stop by his house at least once a week to pick his brain on new details I had questions on and we'd follow those rabbit holes til I was overwhelmed with new story detail possibilities and could absorb no more. Much to my delight he was eager to share all the knowledge he could pump out of that great mental library of his. He was at the same time one of the kindest and most helpful men you could ever meet. He never asked for anything in return either, but with the release of the documentary, I planned to give him a new boost of youthful jubilance by his participation that I hoped would escalate his presence and community acknowledgment and as far and wide as the film could reach. And now with his passing, I'm not only heartbroken for our collective loss of such a great man, but I'm heartbroken for the notoriety he deserved and will now never realize. But I promise you Mike, that I will still do my best to preserve your memory in this film for all time. Even when you are not the one on camera, your kids and grandkids can have solace that your passion and knowledge will live on as part of this film, because without the knowledge that you bestowed upon me through this process, the project would not be what it will end up being. Rest well my friend, for we shall meet again and rejoice.

My most sincere condolences and prayers go out to the Cateora family. “know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love.”
