Obituary of Ovidio I. Gonzalez Sr.
Ovidio I. Gonzalez Sr., 80, of San Benito, Texas entered into eternal rest on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX.
Chief Ovidio I. Gonzalez, Sr. worked 38 years for the San Benito Police Department retiring as assistant police chief. He was a past member of the Harlingen/San Benito United Way and Salvation Army. He was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force. He proudly served as a past member of the Veterans Memorial Board and the Traffic Safety Board of San Benito. He was always proud of his police officers. He served the community with great pride and respect for others. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who were privileged to know him. He was a man of God. A wonderful and loving husband and father. So true and wonderful in all his ways. A loving father with great integrity. He showed all of us unconditional love. “We will miss Your beautiful smile”.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dora Elisa Cantu Gonzalez; parents, Pedro Sr. and Luisa Lugo Gonzalez, one brother, Pete Gonzalez Jr.; and one sister, Basilia G. Agado.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Sylvia Garcia; daughter, Ana Beth G. (DeWayne E.) Moody; two sons: Roberto C. Gonzalez and Ovidio I. Gonzalez Jr.; ten grandchildren: Amaris N. Garcia, Melissa A. Gonzalez, Ashly Ann (Jaime) Nieves, Michelle Gonzalez, Michael Correa, Roberto Gonzalez, Rebecca A. Gonzalez, Carlos A. Gonzalez, Ovidio M. Gonzalez, and Christopher Gonzalez; three great grandchildren: Mathew J. Nieves, Luke Gonzalez, and Leyna Gonzalez: brothers and sisters: Audencia Juarez, Ricardo (Dorothy) Gonzalez, Sarah Galvan, Elisa (Ovidio) Farias, Dora (Jesus) Garcia, Ramiro (Norma) Gonzalez, and Mary Lou Gonzalez.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Home in San Benito.
Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church in San Benito, Texas. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park with full military honors to be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 2035 from Brownsville, Texas, and the last call to be conducted by the San Benito Police Department.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are: Milton Resendez, George Gomez, Rene Garcia, Martin Morales, Oscar Leal, and Manuel Cisneros. Honorary pallbearers will be the San Benito Police and Fire Department.
