Jan was an amazing person to learn from. Attorneys and judges would consult with her when they had questions re: family law. She knew it all. When she was on your side you were getting an abundance of knowledge.
Jan began her career a little late in life. She would often tell me how it took her 10 years to go through school while working full time. At one point someone told her "at this rate you'll be 40 before you get your degree". Her response was, "I'd rather be 40 with my degree than 40 without it". When i signed up this year to go back to school, all i could hear were her words in the back of my head. One thing i learned from my time working for her was that there was nothing that woman couldn't accomplish. I wanted to be like her; fearless and admired.
Rest in peace, Jan. I know you'll watch over Joel until you two are together again.

Jan was a very kind and gracious woman. She had a heart of gold and that was reflected in everything she did. She will be sorely missed by her family, colleagues and friends. May she RIP.

I've shed some tears thinking about Jan. I realized that a big part of my sadness is self-centered: I will miss her. I will miss that friendly face and those loving embraces in my stressed out world of conflict resolution, which is what we lawyers do. Jan was always someone I could call on for help or know that when we had opposing sides that I had a rational, realistic lawyer on the other side. She was a strong advocate for her clients. I know and have stories.
I supported Jan's run for a judgeship and was so disappointed in the result because she would be been a superb judge: caring, knowledgeable and worldly enough to understand the huge significance of one party having more money than the other in the real world of litigation.
Jan's kindness and selflessness were exemplified in a case I still am finishing. The divorcing parties have battled on everything, and I mean every issue, large and small. Jan was sitting outside the 444th and saw my exasperated face and walked over and offered to mediate the matter for free. What a friend, what a colleague.
Jan deserved to live until she was 105.
For Jan's family and love ones, I am so sorry for your loss. I'm sure she was 50 times more important in your lives. But she was big in my mine.

I was saddened to hear of Jan's passing. She was such a sweet woman who I admired greatly. I've worked with Jan on a professional basis for many years. I've had the privilege of volunteering with her on the Veterans History Project for the Library of Congress taking Veteran's histories from their wartime service. On a more personal basis, Jan gave my daughter a kitty 15 years ago who passed away last August. I always teased Jan about having the most expensive free cat there was, she had mange and every parasite known to man...she was worth it though! Blessings to Jan's family, she will be greatly missed.
