Mary Alice Stokes passed away on Thursday March 19, 2015. A native Texan she was known as “Iris” by family and friends because her blue eyes were said to be the hue of the rainbow “El Arco Iris”. She was born on November 17, 1930 to Petra Weaver Handy and Chauncey WalterHandy in Donna, Texas.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years Henry Clay Stokes, sister Bernice Cavazos and little brother Chauncey Walter Handy Jr.
Mary Alice is survived by her three children, Ida Hagg (Michael) San Benito; Norma McNeely, Baytown, Tx. and Henry Clay Stokes Jr. (Brenda) San Benito, Tx. six grandchildren and two great grandchildren, brother Aaron Perales (Yolanda) and niece Janie Salzman (Leo). After raising her children she and her husband retired from farming in the Rio Hondo area and enjoyedfishing and hunting trips. The family is deeply grateful to Delores Becho and her family for the love and care given to Mary in the last years of her life.
Visitation will be held Monday, March 26, 2015 from 10 am to 11:30 am at Thomae Garza Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 12 noon to Mont Meta Memorial Park.
