Port Isabel, TX - Israel P. Vasquez, Sr., 64, of Port Isabel, Texas passed away Sunday December 10, 2006 at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, TX. Mr. Vasquez was born on January 8, 1942 in Laureles, Texas and was raised in Port Isabel. He was a member of Our Lady Star of Sea Catholic Church of Port Isabel and served in law enforcement for over 22 years. He served as a peace officer for the city of Port Isabel from 1973 through 1976 and from 1976 to 1979 in the city of South Padre Island. Mr. Vasquez also served as a peace officer in Los Fresnos from 1979 through 1981 and he retired as Chief of Police from Laguna Vista where he served from 1981 through 1995.
He is survived by his wife, Celia Pena Vasquez of Port Isabel. 3 Sons, Israel (Amelia) Vasquez Jr. Of Laguna Vista, TX. Ronald (Teresa) Vasquez Sr. Of Corpus Christi, Texas and Lee Andrew (Laura) Vasquez Sr. of McAllen, Texas. Grandchildren, Isabel, Israel III, Maria Celia "Sally", Veronica, Ronald Jr., Lee Andrew Jr., Lauren Ashley and Leo Anthony Vasquez. 2 Step grandchildren, Santos and Amanda Moncivaiz. Brother, Amado (Lupita) Vasquez; 3 Sisters, Mary Dickey, Beatrice Bishop, and Henrie (Joe) Morales; one brothers in law, Jesus Maria Pena Jr. abd Several nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, Antonio P. and Santos P. Vasquez. Father in law, Jesus Maria Pena Sr., Mother in law, Maria R. Pena, and three brothers-in-law, Ernest Bishop and Marvin Dickey. Visitation will be held today Wednesday December 13, 2006 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito and from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Holy Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. tonight at Our Lady Star of Sea Catholic Church, 705 S. Longoria St. in Port Isabel. Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday December 14, 2006 at Our Lady Star of Sea Catholic Church in Port Isabel. Interment will follow to Port Isabel City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be, Israel Vasquez III, Mario Gutierrez, Joe Morales, Roger Fernandez, Tony Vasquez, and Leandro Pena Jr. Honorary Pallbearers, Amado Vasquez, Tony Gonzalez, and Lee Andrew Vasquez Jr. The Police Honorary Color Guard will present a 21 gun salute at the grave side.
