Dear Family of Virginia Cowen, I just found out this evening, quite by accident as I "surfed" the web, that Virginia Cowen passed away in 2010. She is a part of so many special memories I have of living and teaching in Brownsville in 1965-1966. I taught at the High School, but I met Mrs. Cowen through my roommate, Peggy Levings Christensen, who taught at Central Junior High with her. Mrs. Cowen was always so kind and caring toward me, a stranger in her midst. In fact, once when I was quite ill with what turned out to be an advanced case of strep throat, she made sure I got to a doctor!!! So often I was included at Sunday dinners at her house. She would make huge, delicious lasagnas, that truly fed a crowd. She may have been struggling to feed her large family, but she always welcomed more guests to the table. What fun it was to be in the midst of such a large, active, loving family. I remember paying the older boys to wash and wax my car and taking the little ones fishing. Mrs. Cowen was truly an amazing woman, so somehow it was no surprise to learn that her children have grown up to be wonderful, successful people. God bless you all. I treasure the memories of your sweet, strong mother. Please accept my deepest condolences upon the loss of her earthly life. Sincerely, Sandra

Mama, I have now finished my assignment. I trust you are pleased. I love you so much and so do so many more... Some are your offspring, The rest are the ones left with your handprint on their heart. You truly moved the world several degrees in the right direction. Good night Mama.......I love you!

Not only is the wonderful Cowen family losing a devoted matriarch, but the entire community is losing one of its stalwarts. Having worked for years with Paul Cowen, I felt I got to know Mrs. Cowen from his inspiring stories about her I was privileged to write a little about her myself from the family history and felt it an honor. Although I didn't get to personally meet her, I felt close to her because of her love of literature and because she was a strict English teacher. As evidenced by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she left a legacy of a strong work ethic, the value of knowledge and education, and the importance of family. May her soul now rest in peace as she looks down on her family and all those whose lives she touched and richly blessed.

Ralph, My mother always spoke very highly of your mother. I will always remember how she would gather her children for Mass and take them to Sacred Heart Church. I think of how strong of a women she was and such a great example for not only her children, but for all. My deepest sympathies for your entire family.

For those of us in the younger Cowen clan, Mama Cowen was our mother, father, aunt, uncle, cousin and every possible relation one could have. We never knew Papa. We never knew our grandparents, or aunts and uncles or cousins. For us, Mama was the woman who made the world. So, for the younger of the clan, there is a profound sense that something greater than life has passed on. There are pebbles on a shore that may seem to be nothing more than one of millions. But when you look at the thousands of ripples Mama made when she cast herself out onto the lake of the world -- family, friends, decades of students, and those they touch because of her -- you see that Mama was a boulder. She will always be the solid ground that keeps us from sinking and keeps us dry in the storm.

Virginia was a friend and an inspiration. For several years she opened her home to our rosary prayer group every Wednesday. She truly believed in the power of prayer and prayed daily for her family and friends. I had the privilege and honor of praying with her the day before she passed.I will truly miss her...but I am sure she will be my prayer partner in heaven.
