Obituary of Lemuel Cox
Please share a memory of Lemuel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Harlingen, Texas: Lemuel Alonzo Cox, 85, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 20, 2010. His family celebrates his life and the homecoming he received as he entered his heavenly home. He was very loved and will be greatly missed by his wife, Arrieal, his family, and many friends.
He was born on November 9,1924 in Nolanville, Texas to Rueben Quitis and Emma White Cox.
Lemuel graduated from La Feria High School in 1944. After graduation he attended a trade school in 1945 and over the following years attended and received a degree of Divinity from The School of Divinity in Georgia.
Lemuel served the Lord as a minister who never let his physical obstacles limit his ministry and service to others. He and his wife had a church in their home on East Pierce Avenue for 25 years. He had a prison ministry that spanned over 20 years and he led many to the Lord on the streets of Harlingen, in the Sun Valley Day Care Center, or wherever he found a hurting soul. He was always a caring friend, an inspiration to those around him, and his loving happy personality made others love him.
Numerous articles were written in the Valley Morning Star newspaper about him and his tricycle ministry. For many years he rode a three wheel bike, sold flowers at a local grocery store, and greeted all he met with a great big smile and a loving heart. In the nursing home in the last days of his life, two staff members recognized him and shared their memories of him as he rode around town on his bike and later in his wheelchair.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ruben Cox: his mother, Emma Cox: his sister, Daisy Thomas: brother, Jerry Cox: and brother, Allen Cox, all previously from La Feria.
He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Arrieal Morgan Cox of Harlingen: brother, Lawrence Cox of Killeen, and sister, Mary Sue Walker of Durango, Colorado, and many loving nieces and nephews. . The family would like to express deep appreciation to the Nurses that Care, Sun Valley Day Care Center, and Cima Hospice for their loving care of Lemuel.
Visitation will be held on Monday March 22, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito.
