Port Isabel, TX- Ruben Abel Barrera, 72, of Port Isabel, TX passed away March 21, 2009 at Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX.
Ruben was born June 1, 1936 in Port Isabel; He was a lifetime resident, he owned and managed the Texaco Service Station on Hwy. 100, then went into the shrimping business, also cattle and farming and other business endeavors. Ruben had a love for the Port Isabel community and its people; he was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church; he loved watching the Tarpons play on Friday nights - he wouldn't miss a game; he loved deer hunting in Del Rio and loved to check on his cows. There was nothing he enjoyed better than spending time with his family. He served in the U.S. Army from June 13, 1958 and was honorably discharged on June 12, 1964. Mr. Barrera is preceded in death by his parents, Rafael and Margarita Broughton Barrera; his brothers, Rafael Barrera, Jr., William Barrera, Ramiro Barrera, Jose D. Barrera and Gustavo Barrera; and his sister-in-law, Angelica Gonzalez Barrera;
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Margarita Barrera; his children, Rubina (David Lee) Barrera Smith and Ruben Abel Barrera, Jr.; a brother, Roberto (Nicolasa) Barrera; and 2 sisters, Ernestina Barrera and Margaret (Thomas) Davis; along with numerous nephews, nieces, and extended family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Holy Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, located at 705 S. Longoria St. in Port Isabel. Visitation will continue on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at Our Lady Star of Sea Catholic Church from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. with Funeral Mass beginning at 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow to Port Isabel City Cemetery. Full Military Honors will be conducted at the graveside by the American Legion Post 205 of Harlingen, American Legion Post 498 and V.F.W. Post 8791 both of Port Isabel. Pallbearers will be Orlando Barrera, Ramiro Barrera, Reynaldo Barrera, Roberto Barrera, Jr., Emilio Cruz, Daniel Davis, Dennis Sanchez and David Lee Smith.
